Nathan's research is on how undergraduates build arguments — specifically, the gap between a thesis a student believes and a thesis they can evidence. He has taught first-year composition for over a decade and now directs a university writing center.

He reviews EssayCrackers guides for two things: whether the reasoning a guide proposes would actually survive a marker, and whether every source cited is real, current and says what the guide claims it says. The second matters more than it sounds. A fabricated-but-plausible citation passes review by eye and is only caught by resolving the URL.

He is sceptical of writing advice that treats structure as a template. Most of what he flags is a guide that would produce a competent essay answering the wrong question.
