Social psychology

Two questions, and the second is the harder one. Saying what social psychology studies is easy; saying why it needed to exist separately means naming something neither parent discipline would have found.

Conformity and obedience are not degrees of the same thing. One responds to a peer group with no power over you; the other responds to an authority that has some — and the classic studies separate them for that reason.
